The window benzodiazepines were originally FDA-approved for. Many people have taken them for years or decades.
Physician-supervised benzodiazepine tapering
Come off benzodiazepines safely, with a doctor beside you.
SafeTaper is a physician-supervised program for gradually tapering off Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Valium and similar medications from home. Start with eligibility; if it looks like a fit, book a discovery call before signup.
Eligibility is free. No signup payment or account creation before the discovery call.

On track. 10 weeks remaining
Why this is hard to do alone
Stopping suddenly is not just hard. It can be dangerous.
Benzodiazepines change your brain chemistry over time. Quitting cold turkey, or tapering too fast without guidance, can trigger severe withdrawal. Most people were never told that.
In 2020 the FDA added its strongest warning about the risks of dependence and withdrawal from long-term use.
What inpatient detox and rehab often cost, frequently on rushed timelines that lead to relapse.
There is a calmer way: a slow, supervised taper designed around your body and your life.

Meet your clinician
Dr. Nathaniel Lepp, MD, MPH
Founder and lead physician. Addiction medicine.
Dr. Lepp completed fellowship training in addiction medicine under Dr. Anna Lembke at Stanford University. He is also a board-certified family physician and surgeon, selected by his peers and supervisors to serve as chief resident.
He founded SafeTaper after a gap became clear in Stanford's dual-diagnosis clinic: people chemically dependent on prescribed benzodiazepines, harmed by a medication they were told to take, with nowhere to turn for specialized care.
“Our mission at SafeTaper is to help people seek freedom from benzodiazepine dependence with careful medical guidance, compassion, and a pace that respects the person in front of us.”

...I can honestly say that going through this program changed my life for the better...
I began taking benzodiazepines for sleep and anxiety, and within weeks I could feel how difficult withdrawal was going to be. With Dr. Lepp's guidance, I tapered gradually over about a year. I felt empowered, supported, and able to keep living my life while I came off the medication.

...I had been on benzos for such a long time that I had forgotten who I was without them...
Coming off benzodiazepines was an emotional rollercoaster, but Dr. Lepp understood what other doctors had dismissed. I sleep better now, tolerate anxiety better, and feel like myself again. SafeTaper helped me get my life back.

...Dr. Lepp met my fear and reluctance with compassion...
I needed someone who understood physical dependence and how frightening tapering can feel. Dr. Lepp met that fear with compassion and a clear plan. I regained independence and control, and I am deeply grateful I did not have to do it alone.
